and it's AMAZING. Jeff got home on Wednesday night at midnight...he might as well walked in with pelts over his shoulder. The HUNTER RETURNS. He looked rugged and thin and fit and smelled like a dirty boat. Which...apparently is how I like my men because it was thrilling to see him and to still feel the whole outdoorsy thing on him.
He had stories of seeing bears (on the shores as they boat by) and seals (who jump up on the boat to get the fish on deck) and whales. One small whale was caught in a net and was rescued by one of the crew guys which was 'the most amazing heroic thing i've ever seen in my life' Jeff said. He cried when he told me the story, so he's not turned into a total hunter/killer. Basically he's had an amazing time and is working harder than he has in his life. Which is what Zach told me on the phone from Alaksa the night before. So all the Weatherford men are WORKING. Including Leo. He takes all the plastic bowls out of the cupboard and then puts them back in. He doesn't say it out loud but I can tell by his drool soaked shirt that it's also the hardest job he's had in his life.
**sleep update..last night he slept thru the night again. He also ate a bottle--rolled over to his side and went to sleep in his crib. He's been doing really well every night. The most he cries--if he cries-is about 10 minutes.
So Zach called me--I WAS HONORED. He said that 'ex-marines are quitting every day' and that he walks around with his face splattered with fish blood because he's too exhausted to wash it off. I think he got in trouble for that. I asked him how the people were and he said 'really cool' then described people that wouldn't really fall under 'really cool' in my world. But he seems to really love all the tough manly characters there. I asked him if there were any gay people there and he wouldn't even answer because he didn't want to say the word 'gay' out loud in case someone overheard him. He also thought it was odd I asked the question. I just thought they could help remind him to clean the blood off his face. Keep him neat.
He sounded sort of stunned by the exhaustion level but also hyped by the challenge. His job the day I talked to him was putting his mouth in the fish and pulling something out. (****I JUST RE-READ THIS AND REALIZED THAT I WROTE 'PUTTING HIS MOUTH IN THE FISH' INSTEAD OF 'HIS HAND'. OH MAN...MOUTH IS JUST BETTER...) Hopefully he pulls out candy and gets to eat it. But I'm thinking maybe not. So..if anyone has something stuck in a fishs mouth--Zach will now on be your go-to guy.
Leo has been so blissed out with Jeff here it's kind of heart-breaking. I feel like it's why he slept so well last night. Kind of like when Aunt Leslie was here--he was being so loved on that he just could pass out knowing all is well in the world. I try to give him that feeling when it's just him and I...but somehow it misses something.
A shout out to the week that Aunt Leslie was here--it was wonderful. She was so loving with Leo. She didn't hit him once. He loved her so much too. (***EXCEPT WHEN SHE BANGED HIS HEAD AGAINST A TREE GETTING HIM OUT OF HIS STROLLER) It was just an amazing fun week. Everyone should have her come and stay a week. Just make sure you can give her 7 diet cokes a day.
At least once a day someone says--"wow..what a gerber baby'. I bragged about that to my friend Udesky and he said 'but the thing is that people think that gerber babies are weird looking'.
BACK TO JEFF. He has the hardest job on the boat because he has to do all the fishing PLUS go cook right after. The first morning he was home he went to grab his coffee and dropped the cup and poured hot coffee all over himself because his wrist was so sore and weak. That was dramatic--which we like.
Basically I hear the term 'man up' every few minutes between what Jeff's doing and Zach is doing. (then Jeff blubbers about the majesty of Alaska...and how much he loves Leo blah blah blah. I'M KIDDING) I feel like some 50's housewife and I love it. All I talk about is how mad I get when it takes a long time for bananas to get ripe..and what stores take what coupons. I like this 'provider' thing-it's hot.
And I'm thinking about extending my trip to Indiana to 2 weeks...I haven't told everyone that yet. I thought I'd surprise you by saying "i'm not leaving yet".
Jeff is only here for 4 days and leaves on the 4th of July. Boo.
